PRESERVATION OF MONDULKIRI’S NATURAL LANDSCAPE, FLOURA & FOUNA

The large grounds of the Nature Lodge, are spread over 7 hectares of conserved natural landscape. Low density construction allows us to dedicate a large area to nature and wilderness. We have chosen to mainly preserve the wild native plants, trees and shrubbery, rather than plant a fancy tropical garden. In order to not disturb the plants & habitats of local birds and wildlife species.

PROMOTION OF ANIMAL WELFARE & WILDLIFE CONSERVATION

We regularly help to promote local conservation / wildlife protection projects and encourage our guests to support ethical elephant tours / trekking adventures. We recommend to all guests to avoid consuming wildlife meat or products.
On the lodge grounds: A small herd of local cows and 4 Khmer ponies, rescued from abusive cart pulling work. The animals roam freely on the grounds and help with lawn mowing duties.

SOCIAL ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

We try to promote locan culture and use locally produced goods, procucts and decorative items wherever possible. Our furniture and room decorations, are hand made from recycled timber and natural materials. Each year, we donate art and handicraft supplies to local women from neighboring indigenous communities in order to promote cultural activities, handicraft production & create more direct livelihoods for local women and their children.

Sustainable Tourism In Practice

The importance of traveling more sustainably is becoming an increasingly hot topic in the tourism industry.  The truth is, you don’t need to spend a lot of money to become a more eco-friendly traveler. In fact, becoming more conscious about HOW you travel – can actually save you money!

8 easy ecotourism tips so you can travel more responsibly and sustainably, not just for Earth Day but for every day:

  • SAVE WATER– Take shorter showers, turn off the faucet while shaving and brushing your teeth, and re-use towels for multiple days as long as possible.
  • SAVE ENERGY- When you leave your hotel room, turn off the lights, heat/AC and TV. Consider leaving the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door so that the housekeeping staff won’t clean your room every day, which will save on harsh chemical cleaning supplies and the electricity of vacuuming and washing bed linens.
  • REDUCE/REUSE/RECYCLE- Take a BPA-free water bottle you can refill and a food container for takeout. Use just one bar of soap for both sink and shower, return brochures and maps once you’re finished using them. Try to avoid plastic take out containers and separate trash from recyclables.
  • BUY LOCAL- Seek out indigenous artisan’s crafts and locally grown produce.
  • LEAVE ONLY FOOTPRINTS- Stick to marked trails to avoid harming native flora, and consider taking a bag to pick up trash along your journey. Not only is it a great way to help keep the outdoors beautiful, but it also protects wildlife that might eat or get tangled in the garbage.
  • HONOR LOCAL TRADITIONS- Each culture has different traditions from yours. Understand and respect these traditions when travelling, or risk offending the people whose culture you’re there to experience. Read more about Khmer customs and conduct here.
  • TAKE YOUR TIME TO BE A TRAVELER - Take time to immerse yourself in local life, music, art and cuisine. Embrace the cultural differences that make each destination unique. Get to know the locals and how they view life. You might be surprised at the things you learn when you open your mind to new ideas!
